I've found this interesting article (unfortunately only in italian) on the italian website "la Voce" about some peculiar aspects of Italian society. In particular this article is focused on those energies and time Italian families devote to themselves which often are translated into real products and services never considered by GDP.
Considering the great volume of home made activities within italian families the resulting importance and economic weight of this peculiar sector is definitively very relevant.
A precise analysis of this phenomenon is the central focus of the book "L'Italia Fatta in Casa (Home Made Italy)" by Alberto Alesina and Andrea Ichino where a quantifications of this economy is provided together with a description of strenght/weakness for-and-against of this particular aspect of our society.
