Fires of Stupidity

Italy is burning. As usual in summertime. This is the sole leit motif of the italian summers. And finally we all are repeating the usual same old things: these are intentional fires, personnel and equippment are lacking, there's no money to deal with these situations and in the meantime woods and forests are burning..

This is not an emergency because it's always the same in any summer. This a rule. And as usual, nothing happens...

This kind of crimes (as well as other environmental crimes) needs severe sanctions and they must be severely applied: but italian justice is bocked and all the efforts thus vanish

It's also necessary to stop the perverse links between fires and business. Too many people find economic advantage in fires and in the economy of the fire emergency. Burning a wood is still a good bargain. Everyone knows it in Italy...

 

Bruciare di Stupidità

L'Italia brucia. Come sempre. Questo è il vero, unico, autentico tormentone dell'estate italica. E si finisce per dire e ridire sempre le stesse cose: gli incendi sono dolosi, i mezzi ed il personale scarseggiano, non ci sono i soldi per questo e per quello, vanno in fumo le riserve naturali e i boschi.

Siccome tutte le estati è la stessa cosa, non si può parlare di emergenza. E' la regola. E come al solito non si fa nulla, all'infuori di spegnere il fuoco del momento.

Bisogna rendere i reati contro l'ambiente e la natura (tra cui l'incendio doloso) decisamente più "pesanti" di quanto non siano ora e soprattutto fare in modo che i colpevoli vengano puniti sul serio.  Ma la lentezza della macchina della giustiza vanifica tutti gli sforzi.

E poi bisogna spezzare il business degli incendi: in troppi guadagnano dal fuoco e dal suo spegnimento. Bruciare un bosco è sempre un bell'affare, per tanti, per troppi. Lo sappiamo tutti. Non siamo mica scemi...

 O per lo meno, non fino a questo punto.

Arson in Italy

As every summer, the arson' season has arrived in Italy. I'm talking about arson because nobody no longer can believe to the tale of "self-combustion" caused by high summer temperatures.

This problem, having high costs in terms of humen lives, environmental devastations and economic losses, clearly evidences the total lack of a culture of territory in Italy and those strict links between speculation, corrupted politicians and crime (more or less organized).

After all, as mentioned by a major in a town in Sardinia, who still believes that arsonists are only local foolish guys is only a day-dreamer. As long as the "fire business" or the exploitation of fired areas will be more gainful than woods and forrests' management and preservation, there will be nothing to do...

In a country and in a period where anything and anyone can be bought or sold, without this reverse perspective, there will be nothing to do.

The most boring thing for me in discussing this issue is to re-write the same post every summer. And I'm doing the same now. Why I'm doing so? Because I feel that the deeper reasons which cause fires not only have not been removed, but rather they are continuosly enforced.

These devastations are not the effect of a lack of an environmental culture but they must be referred to pathological expressions of hyper-utilitarism and hyper-materialism, which deeply characterize our present society. The same mentality at the base of the widespread illegality in Italy - which hits for example public health, organized crime, waste (mis)management or the systematic destruction of our historical and cultural heritage - is at the base of the forests’ devastations.

In Italy one can speculate on anything by now and it seems particularly lucrative the speculation on those factors influencing the future of all (environment, security, health, education, etc.). From this, the degradation business finds its sources through the possibility to make easy money from fire extinguishing, forest re-plantation, construction speculations, agricultural land widening, illegal gaming, job creation in emergency squads, use of air and land equipments, etc.

The problem is thus the ethic degradation preceding the environmental degradation to which no replies have been identified yet; it seems rather that in these more recent times the opportunist and cheating culture is even politically very appealing and attractive.

Just think that it's not a coincidence that in Italy arsonists very rarely are identified and arrested and only few local administrations have created a land register of the fired areas (as imposed by a national law).

Incendi Dolosi

Come tutte le estati, arriva la stagione degli incendi dolosi. Parlo di incendi dolosi perchè ormai al fenomeno dell'autocombustione. che ci è stato propinato per anni, non ci crede più nessuno.

Purtroppo questo fenomeno, che ha dei costi enormi in termini di vite umane, danni ambientali ed economici, denuncia chiaramente l'assenza totale di una cultura del territorio nel nostro Paese e degli stretti legami fra speculazione, politica corrotta e criminalità (più o meno organizzata).

Del resto, come ha detto anche un amministratore locale della Sardegna, chi pensa ancora che i piromani siano dei balordi "locali" è un illuso: fintanto che il business degli incendi o lo sfruttamento delle aree incendiate saranno più remunerativi della gestione dei boschi e delle foreste non ci sarà nulla da fare.

La cosa che mi secca di più, è ogni estate dover scrivere sempre lo stesso post. Cosa che faccio puntualmente anche questo anno. Perchè faccio questo? Semplicemente perché le ragioni più profonde che causano gli incendi non solo non vengono rimosse, ma anzi ogni anni vengono rafforzate.

Queste devastazioni non sono l’effetto di una carenza di cultura puramente ecologista ma devono essere ricondotte ad espressioni patologiche di grave iper-utilitarismo e iper-mercificazione indiscriminate che connotano pesantemente la nostra società. La stessa mentalità che si colloca alla base delle frodi nella sanità (con le conseguenti minacce alla salute pubblica) o della sistematica distruzione del patrimonio storico e culturale è la causa primaria della devastazione di boschi e foreste. Ormai in Italia si può speculare su tutto ed in particolare è sempre più lucroso speculare impunemente su quei fattori che incidono sul futuro di tutti (salute, ambiente, alimentazione, sicurezza, ecc…). Da qui si sviluppa il business del degrado ovvero la possibilità di fare soldi sulle attività di spegnimento, rimboschimento, abusivismo edilizio, allargamento delle zone agricole e di pascolo, bracconaggio, creazione di posti di lavoro per gli stagionali della forestale, impiego di mezzi di terra e aerei, ecc.

Il problema è quindi il degrado etico, prima ancora di quello ambientale, cui non sono state fornite risposte; sembra anzi che in questo periodo più recente la cultura dei furbetti e degli arrivisti sia anche politicamente molto vincente.

Non è un caso forse che i piromani non vengano quasi mai individuati ed arrestati oppure che pochissimi siano ancora i comuni italiani che abbiano realizzato il famoso catasto delle aree incendiate?
